Description:

Elite Connector is proud to partner with a global leader in the Automation industry in the search for an Automation & Controls Engineer. This organization designs and integrates high-value robotic and automated systems that are deployed across North America, leveraging advanced control architectures and standardized PLC platforms.

Role Overview

This role is best suited for an engineer who is strong in understanding and analyzing PLC-based systems, with a focus on troubleshooting, logic interpretation, and structured modifications rather than full ground-up programming.

The successful candidate will work within established automation frameworks and “master” architectures, supporting system optimization, diagnostics, and commissioning activities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Analyze and interpret PLC logic, HMI interfaces, and control system architecture
  • Troubleshoot software-level issues within automated industrial systems
  • Support optimization and performance improvements of existing automation programs
  • Modify and adapt PLC programs within standardized architectures (not full development from scratch)
  • Participate in equipment commissioning at company facilities and customer sites across North America
  • Support field teams and customers with technical troubleshooting and system understanding
  • Collaborate closely with engineering teams to ensure system reliability and performance

This position is not primarily focused on building PLC programs from scratch. Instead, the emphasis is on:

  • Reading and understanding existing PLC logic
  • Troubleshooting sequences and system behavior
  • Making structured, controlled modifications to existing programs
  • Working within established automation standards and architectures

Required Skills & Experience

  • Experience in industrial automation or controls engineering environments
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret PLC code and control logic
  • Hands-on experience with troubleshooting automation systems at the software level
  • Familiarity with industrial systems such as pneumatics, hydraulics, servomechanisms, and robotics
  • Exposure to Allen-Bradley and/or Siemens platforms (strong asset)
  • Strong analytical thinking and structured problem-solving abilities
  • Technical degree in Mechatronics, Electrical Engineering, Controls, or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • Willingness to travel regularly across North America (15-20%)

Ideal Candidate Profile

The strongest candidates will be able to clearly articulate:

  • How they diagnose and troubleshoot PLC logic issues
  • Examples of modifying or adapting existing programs
  • Their structured approach to problem-solving in automation environments
  • Comfort working within pre-existing control architectures
  • Clear, logical communication of technical reasoning
