The Medical Surgical Technician (MST) is part of the transition to practice pathway at Jackson Hospital, established to decrease a known experience-competency gap in new graduate registered nurses. The MST will be assigned in the patient care tech role in a unit but may perform other skills with supervision as set in the Alabama Board of Nursing Standardized Procedure and Jackson Hospital's guidelines. Under the direction of a licensed nurse, the MST performs patient care, respiratory functions, and unit functions appropriate to the position, and in compliance with hospital policies, protocols, and procedures. The MST is expected to anticipate the needs of the patient within their scope of practice, collect reports and document patient data, transcribe orders, and keep the licensed nurse informed of pertinent changes in patient condition.
