Position Summary
This position reports to the Director of Special Education Services. The Special Education Services Assistant, Counselor, will provide counseling and guidance by supervising educational planning, interpreting test scores, providing occupational and career information, and assisting with other counseling concerns from students, parents, and teachers. All responsibilities will be carried out in accordance with applicable federal, state, and local laws and requirements, as well as in compliance with the Alabama Community College System (ACCS) Board of Trustees and J. F. Ingram State Technical College policies and procedures. Listed below are the primary responsibilities for the position; however, other professional duties may be assigned by the Dean of Students and/or Special Services Director to meet the needs of the College.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Evaluates student records, including school transcripts and state test results.
- Coordinates and assists instructors in recording information on students' permanent records.
- Counsels individual students concerning personal problems that have a bearing upon the learning process and relay to the student's instructors any information helpful to them.
- Coordinates and assists instructors with class schedules, registration, and student plan-of-study.
- Develop a guidance plan based on program needs and assessment.
- Reads, analyzes, and interprets periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to present information effectively and respond to questions from groups of students, co-workers, and the public.
- Uses computers to update and access student data files (i.e., Microsoft Access).
- Provides counseling and/or guidance for occupational and career information purposes.
- Coordinates motivational programs, workshops, and advisory periods for students.
- Ability to provide crisis counseling when necessary.
- Maintains individual student records.
- Participates as a member of the Eligibility and IEP Team to determine appropriateness of an evaluation and eligibility of an individual according to criteria set by state and federal guidelines for special education.
- Proficient use of PowerSchool (i.e., reviewing and maintaining student records, academic plans, and cumulative information)
- Knowledgeable and able to create schedules (master, class, teacher, student, etc.) using PowerSchool Scheduling
- Maintains the confidentiality of all student records.
- Participates in in-service training and other continuing education activities to maintain a high level of competence and skill in the field of Special Education and Correctional Education.
- Collaborate with ISTC Student Services Director to view and maintain student records, verify grades, and class schedules.
- Follows up with phone calls and emails to schools after requesting records.
- Completes required paperwork in an accurate and timely manner.
- Attends mandatory staff meetings and any other meetings called by the Dean of Students and/or Special Education Services Director.
- Complies with all state and federal rules applicable to the provision of educational services to Special Education Services students.
- Demonstrates computer literacy, such as the ability to utilize current technology to communicate, collect, and analyze data.
- Organizes and completes special projects and performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Dean of Students and/or Special Education Services Director.
- An understanding of and commitment to the philosophy and mission of the Alabama Community College System, J. F. Ingram State Technical College, and J. F. Ingram Special Education Department.

- Serves on committees as needed.

QualificationsREQUIRED: - Master's Degree from a regionally accredited institution in education.
- Alabama Teacher's Certificate with an endorsement in School Counseling P-12.
- Minimum of 2 years of high school teaching experience.
- Must be able to pass a background check.
PREFERRED: - Experience in counseling students with disabilities.
- Knowledge of state, federal, State Board of Education, and institutional education requirements.

Retirement The TRS was established in 1939 to provide benefits to qualified persons employed by state-supported educational institutions.
