Salary Information
Compensation plans are based on a multi-step progression system. The pay range reflects the entry level and maximum salary potential in the assigned pay grade.
**A starting salary may be negotiated and will be commensurate with education, training and experience in alignment with pay administration policies and Montgomery Personnel Board Rules & Regulations**
Nature of Work
The fundamental reason the classification exists is to enforce the National Electrical Code, International Building Codes, Montgomery Electrical Ordinance and Product Safety Standards with regard to residential, commercial and industrial construction and repairs. The work responsibilities are: Inspect residential, commercial and industrial construction for the purpose of enforcement of a minimum standard of requirements to provide a reasonable level of safety, public health and general welfare with regard to the built environment; inspects existing residential, commercial and industrial buildings and facilities for the purpose of approving or denying certificate of occupancy, change of occupancy, business license, liquor license and fire/storm damage; investigates complaints regarding: illegal/unlawful construction activities, unapproved occupancy/use of existing buildings and facilities and initiates legal actions as necessary to obtain compliance and communicates inspection results to persons of interest for the purpose of providing information as needed to approve occupancy and authorize connection of utilities.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or G.E.D. Five (5) years of experience in building electrical construction in a leadership capacity such as Electrical Inspector, Electrical Engineer, Electrical Construction Superintendent, or Electrical Foreman in charge of construction.
Special Requirements
Must be certified or obtain certification within one (1) year of employment, as an Electrical Inspector (Commercial or Residential) through a recognized certification program in compliance with the International Code Council; and within two (2) years be certified in the other (Commercial or Residential). Must have and maintain a valid Alabama driver's license and insurable driving record as needed to operate a city vehicle in the inspection of commercial and residential buildings and sites under construction.
PHYSICAL ABILITIES: The ability to walk, run, stoop, bend, crawl, kneel, climb ladders and stairs as needed. The ability to use all tools associated with electrical construction and repair.
Kind of Examination
Applications are being accepted to fill one (1) vacancy and any other vacancies that may occur during the life of the register. The current vacancy is with the City of Montgomery Inspections Department. Applicants will be screened and qualified based upon education and experience as shown on the application and supplemental questionnaire. For this reason, applicants are urged to fill in the application form and supplemental questionnaire completely, providing detailed information concerning the kinds of jobs they have held, the dates they held them, where and exactly what their duties were. If more than five qualified applications are received, the supplemental questionnaire will be scored to rank the qualified applicants on the eligible register and tied scores will not be broken. If there are five or less qualified applicants, they will be considered equally qualified and placed on the register in alphabetical order.
