Salary Information
Compensation plans are based on a multi-step progression system. The pay range reflects the entry level and maximum salary potential in the assigned pay grade.
**A starting salary may be negotiated and will be commensurate with education, training and experience in alignment with pay administration policies and MCCP Board Rules & Regulations**
Nature of Work
The fundamental reason this position exists is to protect property, visitors, employees, the Montgomery Zoo animal collection, and provide enforcement of security rules and regulations. The work responsibilities of this position are: provide general security of the zoo grounds, interact and provide customer service to patrons, staff, and zoo visitors; investigate and take action on alarms sounded and unusual situations, observes and assist with animal care including feeding, cleaning and general husbandry of the live animal collections of the zoo. Due to the nature of work, this position is very labor intensive. The Zoo Security Officer receives direct supervision from the Zoo Security Supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications
High School diploma or G.E.D. and six months experience in security work, protecting persons and property.
NOTE: Qualifying education, training, and experience that provide the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job will be considered.
Special Requirements
Work will consist of nights, weekends, and holidays. Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid Alabama driver's license and insurable driving record to drive city vehicles within sixty days of employment. Must submit to a background check due to the nature of the position.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to walk, stand, and remain alert for the duration of the assigned shift as needed to perform security duties and patrol assigned areas. Must be able to climb stairs and a ladder at a height of 14 feet as needed to perform inspections of the interior and exterior of the facility. Must be willing to work outside as needed to perform security duties. Must be able to tolerate working under difficult conditions to include extreme heat and cold. Must be able to meet deadlines as needed to care for animal collection, maintain exhibits and security needs of the Zoo. Must be able to stoop, climb, walk, run and crawl. Must be able to lift heavy objects such as food bundles, hay, or food bags weighing up to 60 pounds unassisted.
Kind of Examination
Applications are being accepted to fill a vacancy and any other vacancies that may occur during the life of the register. The current vacancies are with the City of Montgomery Zoo. Applicants will be screened and qualified based upon education and experience as shown on the application and supplemental questionnaire. For this reason, applicants are urged to fill in the application form and supplemental questionnaire completely providing detailed information concerning the kinds of jobs they have held, the dates they held them, where and exactly what their duties were. If more than five qualified applications are received, a selection procedure will be administered to rank applicants on the register. Tied scores will not be broken. If there are five or less qualified applicants, they will be considered equally qualified and placed on the register in alphabetical order.
